8 reasons I love autumn

I’m not really a fan of the summer. It’s too hot, I never know what to wear, and I hate getting attacked by bugs everywhere I go. I’m just not a summer person, and I never have been, so the arrival of September always brings with it a feeling of excitement and anticipation for me. I love autumn. The weather gets a bit cooler, the nights get longer and Christmas is just around the corner (Yes, I am thinking about Christmas already). There’s so much to look forward to, and so many happy events coming up that there’s never any time to get bored.

As we’re now well into the autumn, I thought I’d share the reasons that I love this time of year so much:

1. The weather is a bit cooler

After spending the summer months soaked in sweat, getting bitten left, right and centre and sleeping on top of the bed covers, the cooler weather that September brings is a welcome change for me. I love the subtle, crisp chill in the air, especially in the mornings. I love being able to wear jumpers and cardigans and snuggle up on the sofa with a blanket and a cup of coffee, and I love being able to put the thicker quilt back on the bed and wrap myself up during the night.

2. Halloween

Halloween is one of my favourite holidays. I’ve always been a fan of horror, and anything creepy or spooky, which makes Halloween perfect for me. I love old, classic horror films like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13^th, and I always try to watch a couple over the evening as we sit by the light of the candle in the pumpkin!

Another thing I’ve always enjoyed is trick or treating, and I’m looking forward to taking Cupar in the future. I think he’s still a bit young this year, but I’m going to dress him up anyway so we can greet the trick or treaters together. I’m thinking maybe a skeloton or a vampire…

3. Bonfire night

Bonfire night always signals the beginning of winter for me. The landscape outside has changed, and the frost is starting to appear. The shortest day of the year is fast approaching and all anybody wants to do is curl up and stay inside.

We didn’t get to do too much last year as Cupar wasn’t too impressed by the fireworks, but now that he’s a year older I’m hoping he’ll enjoy it a bit more. We’re planning to go to a fireworks display in our local city which I’m really looking forward to. Fireworks are so pretty, and I love watching them from the garden for the few days around bonfire night.

4. Christmas

Even though Christmas isn’t technically autumn, I still get excited about it as soon as September hits. Christmas is my absolute favourite time of year, and I love to make it last as long as possible. I always spend the autumn planning how I’m going to decorate the house, planning my recipes and baking schedule and thinking about the gifts that I want to get for my family and friends. I like to go to Christmas craft fairs for gifts, so I start looking early to see what’s on and putting the dates on the calendar so I don’t forget.

5. Birthdays

In our family, all of the birthdays fall between September and March, which makes the last part of the year quite busy. I always look forward to the birthdays, because as a family we’ve always celebrated together with a meal out. I don’t know about the others, but I start planning where I want to go for my birthday meal out at least 3 months in advance!

6. Darker mornings and evenings

I love the darker mornings and evenings that come with autumn. I don’t tend to sleep very well during the summer because the sun always wakes me up, so it’s nice to have those few extra hours of night time (although it is sometimes hard to get up for work when it’s still dark outside!).

I love the darker evenings too as it always makes the house seem really cosy. We can put the soft lighting on and chill and not feel like we should be out doing anything. The darker evenings seem to have been good for Cupar too, as he’s now settled into an 8pm bedtime routine.

7. Different clothes

Most of my wardrobe is made up of jumpers, cardigans, tights and generally anything suited to the cooler weather. I love snuggly knitwear, hoodies and fur lined boots, which obviously can’t be worn during the summer. I try my best, but I just feel so uncomfortable in summer clothes. I tend to wear black a lot too which doesn’t really work when the sun is blaring down on you, so autumn is all about the clothes for me. I always feel like myself again in the autumn, and a big part of that is being able to wear what I want to wear again.

8. Nature

I love the array of colours that you get outside in the autumn. All the reds, browns and yellows can look really beautiful, and there’s nothing better than walking through freshly fallen leaves. Grey skies and puddles always make me feel like a little kid again, and raindrops on the window when you’re in bed is the best sound ever. Autumn is all about nature and I love being able to see the world outside changing with the weather.
